Today we were craving waffles, so we asked Outback Abisko if there was room on their five-hour snowmobile tour from Björkliden to Låktatjåkko Mountain Station. Of course they could make sure we got a spot!
Låktatjåkko Mountain Station belongs to Lapland Resorts and is Sweden’s highest mountain station, located at 1,228 metres above sea level. It’s known for its waffles and offers accommodation, a restaurant, a bar and a sauna. To get here, you can either hike, ski, take Lapland Resorts’ tracked vehicle or, as we did, ride a snowmobile.
In Björkliden we met Arina, a guide with Outback Abisko. She helped us and the other guests get dressed for the tour and went through the safety briefing.

After we got our snowmobiles and tried driving them, our 9-kilometre trip up to Låktatjåkko Mountain Station began.

Once up on the open mountain plateau, you’re captivated by the wonderful nature of the Lapland mountains in Kiruna Municipality. We made lots of stops to really take it in and take photos.

After the first stop with Lapporten in the background, we got to ride freely to feel how the snowmobiles handled off the trail. Everyone’s inner child came out; it was safe riding, but at a slightly higher speed than before.

The last kilometres were quite steep uphill, since we were heading up to 1,228 metres to enjoy waffles.

It felt reassuring to know we were riding good snowmobiles and had a guide who knew the area, especially when the weather turned a bit worse towards the end of the leg to Låktatjåkko Mountain Station, making visibility less than ideal.

Once we arrived at Låktatjåkko Mountain Station, we saw Lapland Resorts’ tracked vehicle, which you can ride in winter. We’ll save that for another time when the waffle craving returns.

Inside Låktatjåkko Mountain Station it was cosy and warm. The photographer was a bit quick, so it was Sofia’s waffle with Västerbotten cheese and cloudberry jam that ended up in the photo. You could sit here and enjoy yourself for as long as you like, and the coffee wasn’t bad either.

On the way back we came across two hikers who had walked all the way from the mountain station, and in the distance we saw two reindeer eating reindeer lichen. A birdwatcher in the group was hoping to spot ptarmigan.
We recommend this tour; it has everything you need to see and do in the Lapland mountains, creating memories and a desire to explore more up here in Björkliden.
